Diabetic diets focus : Carbohydrates A diabetes diet should contain a relatively high amount of carbs (carbohydrates) which you will get from vegetables, fruits, whole grains etc. The amount of carbohydrates and fat (mono-saturated) in diabetic diets should be at least 60% of the total calorie intake and possibly up to 70%. The actual value will depend on other factors and this is where you need specific advice from your dietician or physician. Proteins in diabetic diets Protein should be fairly low in a good diabetic diet. No more than 20% of the total amount of calories should come from protein in good diabetic diets. When choosing - avoid proteins from meats (high fat) and try to eat more fish, soy or poultry which is the better source of proteins. Fats in diabetes diets Animal fats is something that should be avoided, trans-fatty acids as well (that is what you find in processed food like ready meals, fast foods etc). Animal fats are saturated but what you want are the monosaturated fats from sources like olive oil. Sugar in a diabetic diet As a diabetic, you can still have food with sugar but you need to consume sweet food in moderation. The healthiest of the sweet foods are fruits (fresh).
